8 Health Benefits Of Delicious Apricots (Jardalu Or Khubani)

Apricot is a bright yellow, orange coloured fruit, with velvety soft skin, which is similar to peaches in external appearance. Although the fruit is non-native to India, both fresh and dried forms of the fruit are widely consumed in different parts of the country. Apricots appear in the month of May and is available until August end. You may consume dried apricots all year round, but if you want to reap the benefits of fresh apricots, this is the ideal time. Here are some reasons you should not miss apricots this summer.

1. Reduces the risk of fatty liver disease: Dietary apricot is shown to have protective effect on the hepatic steatosis (also called fatty liver disease) and liver damage. A study by Ozturk F and colleagues found that apricot feed reduced liver injury in rats suggesting that it may help to reduce the risk of fatty liver disease.

2. Improves eye sight: Apricots are highly rich in vitamin A. About one cup of chopped apricots fulfills 60% of your daily recommended intake of vitamin A. Vitamin A, as we all know, is good for eyes’ health. It strengthens the optic nerves. It not only helps reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) but also helps cure it.

3. Fights inflammation: Being rich in catechins, a group of flavonoids, apricots exhibit a strong anti-inflammatory action. According to scientists, catechins inhibit of the key enzymes required in the process of inflammation.

4. Supports digestive system: You’ll get 3% of your recommended fibre intake with just one small-sized apricot. This fibre, being soluble in nature, helps breakdown and digestion of food you eat. It also helps better absorption of nutrients from the food.

5. Reduces cholesterol: Soluble fibre is known to reduce total cholesterol levels in the blood by reducing re-absorption of bile in the intestine. Lack of absorption caused bile to get excreted through feces. In order to compensate for the loss of bile through excretion, the liver produces bile salts with the help of cholesterol present in the blood. Since apricots contain soluble fibre, apart from digesting food, it will simultaneously work towards reducing your blood cholesterol levels to make more bile.

6. Reduces the risk of heart disease: The effect of apricots in reducing the risk of heart disease can be explained with two different mechanisms. Firstly, apricots are rich in antioxidants like carotenoids and flavonols that prevent oxidation of cholesterol in the arteries. Secondly, different nutrients in apricots help in reducing risk factors like obesity, cholesterol and diabetes that are linked to heart disease.

7. Prevents anemia: Apricots contain a significant amount of non-heme iron, a type of iron that is absorbed very slowly by the body. This type of iron is especially helpful because it remain is the body for a longer period of time, allowing better absorption and preventing development of anemia. But don’t forget to eat vitamin C rich foods to get full benefits of iron.

8. Prevents cancer: Preventing cancer could be as easy as cutting a few slices of apricots and adding it to your morning cereal breakfast or to your glass of milkshake. Because of their potent antioxidant activity, apricots help preventing direct DNA damage that could lead to cancer.
